Young Designers' Scholarship Competition
The Young Designers' Scholarship Competition is a house design contest for high school students interested in drafting, architecture or home building. The competition is open to any student enrolled in a public or private secondary school from the Cities of Chesapeake, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, and the Counties of Accomack, Gloucester, Isle of Wight, James City, Mathews, Northampton, Southampton and York. You do not have to be a senior to participate!
The 2026 Young Designers' Competition criteria and 2026 Student Information Sheet are available now.
The 2026 judges' feedback form will be used to determine the winners.
*NEW FOR 2026 Digital entries are now being accepted and must be submitted following the same board layout as shown below.

This sample entry board layout must be used. When opened, boards should measure no more than 36 inches tall by 90 inches wide. Digital submissions should follow the same layout. Layering is permitted for all drawings.
Scale is as follows:
1 inch = 20 ft: site plan
1/4 inch = 1 ft: front/rear elevation and floor plans
The 2025 Young Designers’ Scholarship Competition awarded four scholarships in 2025.
Hayden Reynolds of the Advanced Technology Center in Virginia Beach won first-place with the entry pictured below:

Andersen Kronauge, also of the Advanced Technology Center, received second place for his entry featured below:
Evan Alberti of Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach won third place

and Benjamin Collins of the Advanced Technology Center received the Honorable Mention award.
